10 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
|
1. Why should I train my dog?
In today's climate with cities and counties trying to legislate pet owners out of existence, it is imperative that you make your dog a "Canine Good Citizen."
2. Do I attend classes with my dog, or do I leave him there?
We firmly believe that superior training requires that both the handler and his dog attend classes together, and that the handler/dog team work from their home at least twice every day.
3. How young can my dog start training?
As early as 3 weeks old, the puppy is beginning his behavioral training by his mother. By five weeks, he is capable of learning the basic obedience commands. However, we do not accept dogs until they are protected by their puppy shot series.
4. Should my dog's vaccinations be current?
Vaccinations are for the safety of your dog. In addition to the regular puppy series and rabies vaccination, any dog who will be in close proximity to strange dogs should also have the Bordetella (Kennel Cough) vaccination.
5. How long after we start training will results be noticeable?
6. Will Basic Obedience Training help me solve other behavior problems?
Basic obedience is the key to solving most behavioral problems. Once your dog is trained to understand the basic commands, it is much easier to tackle problem behaviors.
7. Will I be using "Tid-Bits," treats or bait to train my dog?
No. To assure a solid foundation for all obedience, we do not use treats for training. Later, in advanced obedience, treats are sometimes useful to polish your dog's performance.
8. Are all the dogs in the class at one time?
Only after Class 6 are the dogs ever all out at one time. Prior to that, they are worked one dog at a time.
9. Why only one dog in class at a time?
It is very important that everyone, including the dogs, understand each exercise completely before trying to execute any command. Therefore distractions must be kept to a minimum during class.
10. What does it cost to train my dog?
Tuition for the eight-week Basic Class is $155.00 as of January 1, 2007. This includes the Training Manual and weekly worksheets. Training equipment is available at very reasonable prices:
6' lead = $10.95
20' long line = $9.95
training collar = $4.95-$7.95 depending upon size
With approval from the instructor, tuition for a second dog from the same family, trained at the same time as the first dog, is $135.00.
